ORCA is pleased to inform that, as of August 20, 2025, SpaceX has introduced a new contract option for Starlink services called “Standby Mode.” Standby Mode allows users to temporarily pause their Starlink service while still maintaining a low-speed connection. This ensures that the system remains active and can be re-activated instantly by the user at any location. After conducting in-house testing, ORCA would like to share the following details: *Eligible Antennas: All Starlink antennas purchased directly from SpaceX *Monthly Fee: JPY 730 (USD 5.0) *Connection Speed: Approximately 200–500 kbps (downlink) *Data Capacity: Unlimited *Email Use: Available *Web Access: Available (no restrictions observed ) *Coverage: All Starlink service areas, including at sea Our tests confirm that this performance level is sufficient for essential onboard communication. Among vessels installed with ORiON Plus, cases of equipping multiple Starlink units have been increasing. Assigning one unit to this Standby Mode plan provides a reliable backup for the main connection. For vessels relying solely on FBB or Certus, Standby Mode offers an alternative with similar speeds but at significantly lower cost, while still providing unlimited data. As vessels installed with ORiON Plus are capable of integrating all upstream communication systems, this new contract option is a valuable addition that broadens connectivity choices.
